Dr. Rajinder Singh Tonk
Founder, Chairman of the Board
As a young medical resident, Dr. Rajinder Singh Tonk often volunteered in under-served areas near Delhi to provide medical care. Moved by the lack of basic facilities and the state of health care for the poor, he pledged to himself that one day he will take health care to those who need it the most.
He obtained an MD in Internal Medicine from the renowned Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh. Giving up the prospects of a higher salary and a more comfortable lifestyle that accompany a private sector job, he joined the government-run Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in New Delhi to serve patients across the economic spectrum. In the three decades of clinical practice and teaching that followed, Dr. Tonk supervised the Nursing Home unit, a facility with 50 beds, provided critically-needed care to patients, led community welfare programs and mentored young residents.
On Aug 15, 2007, he founded Chaupal. Spending his Sundays in Banyapur, his ancentral village, he would see patients and talk to locals about nutrition, disease prevention and hygiene. Whether it is recruiting medical professionals, building the health center, contacting the village sarpanch in preparation for upcoming health camps, examining patients, meeting donors, or planting saplings with village kids, Dr. Tonk has immersed himself in Chaupal to fulfill the promise he made to himself thirty years ago.
Three years, over a hundred health camps and 1 full-service medical center later, Dr. Tonk is still raring to go. "There is so much more that needs to be done. This is just the beginning, "he surmises with a beaming smile.
I am a co-founder of Chaupal where I focus on strategic planning and business development. Prior to Chaupal, I was a management consultant at Deloitte where I worked on business transformation projects for Fortune 500 companies in healthcare, pharmaceutical, financial services and retail industries. My work experience also includes internships in investment banking at Barclays Capital and Piper Jaffray. Born and raised in India by physician parents, I experienced first-hand the inequities in healthcare, which inspired me to start Chaupal. I hold a Bachelor's in Economics from University of Delhi, Master's from UPenn and MBA from Cornell University.
